Music school is really expensive! But what if it doesn't have to be like that?
In 2011, Clara started her degree at Berklee College of Music, and graduated with a B.Mus (Summa Cum Laude) by 2014. She had attained a major in music education, a minor in conducting, and a Massachusetts teaching license. How did she finish a 4.5 year course in 3 years? Credit by exams (CBX). Most music schools allow incoming freshman and existing students to take an exam to test out of lower level core music classes. By doing so, she saved a lot of time, and a lot of money!
Here's the cost breakdown (based on current rates):
- Credits saved: 32 credits.
- Tuition per year (32 credits): $50,540
- Cost of living in Boston per year: $21,901
- Money saved: $72,441
She has helped students study for their credit-by-exams (CBX), or ESPA (Entering Student Proficiency Assessments), and they have, on average, shaved two semesters, or one year, off their college expenses! Taking ear training or MAT (Music Application & Theory) with Clara is one of the first steps towards this!

About MasterMusic.Online
After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Clara transitioned her school teaching career into a full-time private teaching studio. Her experience with teaching ear training and theory, coupled with her Berklee College of Music experience, led to a demand from students wanting lessons for Berklee audition preparation and Berklee ESPA preparation.
In the summer of 2021, Clara launched her first ESPA prep classes, with classes in Ear Training 1, Ear Training 2, Music Application and Theory, and Harmony 2. These classes helped many Berklee students test into higher level entry courses during their first semester at Berklee, such as Ear Training 2, Ear Training 3, Harmony 2, or Harmony 3.
Although live classes worked well, the pacing of live classes suited only some students, whereas they were too fast/slow for others. That's when the idea of a self-paced hybrid course "MasterMusic.Online" started! Students can login and take the course as fast or as slow as they'd like. And they'd have the opportunity to make appointments to meet with Clara if they'd like.
Clara currently lives in Houston, TX, USA. She runs a private studio with online and in-person lessons at clarachanmusic.com. When she's not teaching music, she enjoys spending time with her husband (and two cats), scuba diving, and travelling!
